Best Takeout Counter (grocery Division)

Walking into Winslow's Home feels a bit like going back in time, like popping into one of the general stores that appear periodically in the Little House books, those magical wonderlands where the Ingalls family stocked up on salt pork, bolts of calico and the sticks of horehound candy that Laura and Mary so rarely got to savor. Winslow's makes you want to buy all of that, plus adorable things that modern technology has made obsolete like butter churns and washtubs. But maybe you'll want to settle for a wicker picnic basket (and OK, OK, a checked gingham tablecloth) so you can fill it with the delicious sandwiches and desserts from the back cooler. Winslow's has edited down its takeout selection to the food you'd be most comfortable eating outside on a lovely day: cold sandwiches (including its famous brisket), salads and, of course, dessert: cookies, brownies, pie and the stroke-of-genius no-bake cheesecake, which you eat with a spoon from its plastic container. As the French say, parfait!
