Ask any sound engineer worth his faders and he or she will tell you: Garbage in, garbage out. But a soundman like Pancho, the veteran engineer who works many of the Duck Room's high profile shows and who can handle any lineup of norteño bands in and around Cherokee Street, understands how to make a band sound "as good as the record." Pancho, born Wilbert Vincent Lichtenberg Jr., isn't fronting. He's been running sound in and around St. Louis since the '70s and even honed his chops on a brief festival tour with the likes of James Gang and Foghat. In the salad days of the '80s he was the go-to engineer for big-draw cover bands and now freelances and works for the Pro Sound Store in Maplewood. Getting a balanced, clear and always musical mix in a packed basement bar for the man who invented rock & roll isn't for the faint of heart or ears. But Pancho always makes it look and sound easy.
