The Webster University Film Series unerringly melds offbeat cinema with popular culture, hosting everything from challenging contemporary documentaries to beloved Criterion classics and campy cult flicks. So when the series organizers team up with Cinema St. Louis each year to tackle classic French cinema, a notoriously intimidating genre, the project must be, first and foremost, approachable, and it must also incorporate contemporary trends. This past summer's fourth iteration of the annual fest was anchored by a special Georges Méliès program, created in response to public interest in the auteur that followed Martin Scorsese's 2011 feature Hugo. The event featured Méliès' classic Le voyage dans la lune (A Trip to the Moon), as well as a potpourri of ten short silent works that were scored live by St. Louis' own Rats and People Motion Picture Orchestra. Among the other programs was a screening of Sans Soleil, Chris Marker's infamous psychotropic travelogue, and Jean-Luc Godard's satiric Weekend. What will next year's festival hold? Nous ne le savons pas — but we can assure you it won't disappoint.
