Best Neighborhood Bar

The Tug Inn has a reputation as one of the most ominous, if not the most ominous, bars in West Seattle. This has much to do with its being the only bar-save for the Skylark-on Delridge Way, long considered the most ominous stretch of road in West Seattle. Tell the average West Seattleite that you've actually entered the Tug's doors, and his or her natural response will be, "Ooohhh, I've always wondered what it's like in there." The bar's Web site (it only added hard liquor within the last year; before that it was known as the Tug Tavern) acknowledges this reputation, striking an understandably defensive tone: "The Tug has been known as a dive bar that is full of violent and crazy drunks. This reputation is completely false. The Tug is full of middle to older aged customers who like to come in and enjoy good music while they drink...You'll feel as if you are at a house party, but without all the clean up at the end!" While your inaugural visit to the place can feel as though you've been inserted into an episode of Twin Peaks, as one first-timer aptly described the experience to me, Twin Peaks was a hell of a show-and the Tug is a hell of a bar. Once you get your bearings, it's not scary at all. The "house party" description is spot-on; everyone here seems to know one another really well (maybe too well), and the decor is reminiscent of a garage refurbished to serve as a party room, with the driveway doubling as a sundeck.-Mike Seely
