The climbing, clattering disassembly lines at Total Reclaim's crammed-to-the-rafters SoDo warehouse have a mysterious,sci-fi feel to them. Old computers, fat monitors, obsolete TVs, and a tonnage of weird electronicstrundle up two-story conveyor belts to...where? Another dimension? In a way, yes. Masked-up workers tear apart the glass, plastic, and wire innards, some of them hazardous, for recycling and a second chance at life, while other parts are properly disposed of. TR will pick up discarded electronics for a $65 fee, but customers can also drop them off for free at the vast warehouse (follow the signs to the loading dock out back). The recycler also takes in useless appliances and burned-out fluorescent bulbs. It's a needed, and fortunately growing, service:According to the Environmental Protection Agency, more than four billion pounds of e-waste is discarded annually in the United States, but almost 90 percent goesunsalvaged into incinerators or is buried in landfills, forever.-Rick Anderson
