For some of us, at least, the decision to finally get an iPhone came only after weeks of anguished cost-benefit analysis and sleepless nights of worrying whether it was too flashy and ostentatious. Then came the purchaser's remorse-the money spent, but no idea how to turn the thing on. What is this "slider" everyone keeps mentioning? Where are the buttons? Will no one hold our hand? Yes, at the U. Village Apple Store, without snark or condescension. The bright, young, eager staff understand that not all who enter their doors were born in the digital era. Some of us still recall rotary dialing, dual-cassette answering machines, and the reassuring tangle of pigtail cords. Giving up our landline was like giving up part of our childhood. But in their patient, polite reassurance, the Apple Store kids prove that technology and mercy are not mutually exclusive terms.-Brian Miller
