Grand Cafe - Brasserie and Bar

One of the best things about an evening at ACT or the Curran or Marines Memorial is heading to a bistro afterward and deconstructing the experience over noshes and cocktails. The Grand Cafe is the ideal post-theater option -- and not simply because of its location. The snacks prepared and served in the restaurant's cocktail lounge are among the best in the city: big iced platters of oysters, clams, and mussels; artisanal cheeses from here and abroad; light, crisp wood-fired pizzas; omelets and salads and Meyer Ranch Roquefort burgers; French onion soup; S.F.'s best potato chips; a decadent bacon-Gruyère tart; and, best of all, a steak tartare that redefines succulence. The cafe's belle époque setting is delightfully rococo -- theatrical, even -- and the bar serves a variety of drinks that go well with the festive mood and the snacks: a half-bottle of Veuve Clicquot, perhaps, or a snifter of Coeur de Lion Calvados, or, on those chilly summer nights, an Arc de Triomphe -- steaming coffee spiked with Godiva cappuccino liqueur. Bravo!
