There was no small amount of controversy in 1999 when George Lucas won the bidding war to build in the Presidio, and it continued until the Letterman Digital Arts Center opened in 2005. At issue: whether the facilities would blend in with the old-old-old-school Presidio architecture (which they do, nicely). Complicating matters, those Star Wars prequels came out between 1999 and 2005, and nobody's been very happy with George since then. But, now that time has had its way, it's hard not to appreciate Lucas giving us the Yoda Fountain in front of Building B, which is clearly there so we could try to move the statue of Yoda using the force. Why else would he be outside, surrounded by water — just like a sinking X-Wing — rather than inside the lobby with Boba Fett, R2-D2, and the rest? So you can lift him with your mind, you luminous being, you. And if you fail, it's because you do not believe. Speaking of failing, the Yoda Fountain was once listed on Google Maps, but seems to have been removed. Way to go to the Dark Side, Google.
