Mosto
741 Valencia St., San Francisco, CA 94110
(415) 626-1344
If you're a fan of tequila, mezcal, and sotol, then chances are you're already planning to visit Mosto, the Mexico City-inspired bar adjacent to Tacolicious. With a massive selection of over 300 bottles of agave spirits available by the glass (1.5 oz.) or carafe (5 oz.), served with housemade sangrita and a spicy, tangy escabeche pickle back, this dark, narrow space is perfect for a shot and a bite. While the rotating spit of pork for the taco al pastor ($1.50, with grilled pineapple) will rightfully tempt you, it is the taco de nopal y queso ($1.50) you shouldn't miss. The simple combination gets elevated to impressive heights by the cheese: The stringy, mozzarella-like Oaxaca cheese gets some time directly on the grill, giving it a golden brown crust that restrains an oozy layer underneath. The cactus adds some vegetable crunch and a slight tang, balancing out the richness of the cheese. Pair it with another Oaxacan staple, a shot of mezcal, and you have an exotic (and delicious) mini-staycation.
