The Resort on Pelican Hill
22701 Pelican Hill Road S., Newport Beach, CA 92657
(949) 467-6800
The Newport Beach resort boasts two Tom Fazio-designed (and -revamped) courses—Ocean North and Ocean South—that have drawn comparisons to Pebble Beach because of their beauty and magnificent ocean views. Of the pair, the North Course is the more wide-open, less difficult and most scenic. There are spectacular ocean views from every tee on the 7,000-yard, par 71 course. And the land surrounding the course is not lined with the cottages you'll find at other world-class golf destinations. Other than the resort, you're surrounded by the Irvine Ranch Land Reserve. So you can lose your ball in nature! You definitely pay for the privilege, so much so that this plays-like-a-public/pays-like-a-private resort would also be a first-ballot nominee for Best Golf Course When Someone Else Is Footing the Green Fees. For tee times reserved up to two weeks in advance, it's $250 on Mondays and Tuesdays and $270 Wednesdays through Sundays. Fortunately, with rates like that, you don't have to worry about slow groups in front of you or fast ones coming up from behind. And the pain in your own wallet disappears as you walk up to the tee box at No. 18, one of California's great finishing holes.
