Hate pawing through old magazine bins or scrolling through eBay to find a raw piece of grrl history? One alternative is The Fales Library at NYU's Riot Grrl Collection. Senior archivist Lisa Darms has been poring through boxes of zine "masters" (pre-print mock-ups), correspondences, lyrics, pictures, and videos to catalog everything in an organized fashion. The material has been donated by Kathleen Hanna (Le Tigre, Bikini Kill), among others, with future pledges from members of Bratmobile and Sleater-Kinney. Darms plans to have it all sorted out by late fall, but, before you get ready to drool, the collection is only open to "qualified researchers" (a/k/a academes) to view in the Fales' reading room. For the rest of us unqualified schlubs, Darms is also looking to sponsor symposiums and conferences centered around grrl cultural/feminism/queer studies as well as possible exhibitions and screenings.
