"Are you in the mood for something spicy tonight?" No, this wasn't a creepy pickup line from some dude on the next bar stool. Rather, it was an earnest question (our answer was "Absolutely") from a barkeep at Mayahuel, our choice for best tequila splurge that won't leave you with a hangover. Decorated in Spanish tile and votive candles, this East Village hideaway specializes in drinks from south of the border, including tequila and mezcal. You can ring up quite the tab for those delicate little shot glasses (the most expensive mezcal on the menu is the $30 Del Maguey Pechuga), but the quality of the drinks is such that you're not going to mind the price tag after you've imbibed a few of them—nor are you going to regret it in the morning. 304 East 6th Street, 212-253-5888, mayahuelny.com (10003)
