A glimpse into the Voice archives at film listings from 30 years ago shows that Manhattan, as a moviegoer's movable feast, is now but a shadow of its former self. How is it, then, that there are still nights when one has to choose between a half-dozen unmissable cinema options? Because excellent programming generates competitive excellence in turn: Anthology Film Archives stays on its different-drummer beat; Greenpoint's Light Industry has the cajones to collide Todd Phillips and Todd Haynes; BAM programs around hip musical idioms; relative newbie 92Y Tribeca chips out its own VHS-generation niche. But having this year assembled the logistically impossible spaghetti western retrospective, flown in the face of established fashion with exhaustive William Wellman and French Old Wave retros, and locked up U.S. distribution rights to the STUDIOCANAL library, something must be acknowledged: Bruce Goldstein of Film Forum is the Michael Jordan of NYC programming. There will not be another MVP until he is good and ready to walk away. 209 West Houston Street, 212-727-8110, filmforum.org (10014)
