Cafe Carlyle

One of the city's perennial joys is the ability to blow a week's discretionary budget on a night out and live to not regret it that much. The Café Carlyle is worth the cash—it's a perfectly intimate cabaret room where you can feel all fancy while indulging in fine food, mural gazing, and taking in a show, whether it be scratchy-voiced legend Elaine Stritch crooning standards or jazzy Woody Allen taking you on a whole other kind of nostalgia romp. And the place has wisely shaken things up by opening its hallowed doors to newer talents like Gregory Charles, a Canadian singer/pianist who does a pretty inspired request-only show, and Emily Bergl, the actress/singer who brings freshness and quirky humor to the genre, even doing her impression of Stritch sprecht-singing "Girls Just Want to Have Fun." So do you. Spend the money. 35 East 76th Street, 212-744-1600, rosewoodhotels.com/en/carlyle/dining/cafe_carlyle (10021)
