The original site of the city's premier nursery is now blossoming as part of the High Line, and 30 years of real estate development have tossed this business from location to location. It has two branches—one on Manhattan's far west side, and another in Red Hook near the Fairway. But both locations of the Chelsea Garden Center have a stupefying variety of plants, ranging from herbs to cacti to house ferns to shrubs and trees. If you want something it doesn't have in stock, it will custom-order it. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and can help you figure out what's likely to thrive on your windowsill, roof, or sprawling estate. Beyond plants, it also carries a wide range of pots and planters, fountains, birdbaths, and Buddha statues.
