"Amrita" is a Sanskrit word that means everlasting life, and it also refers to the food of the gods. In a city that can often be cold and distant, what sets Café Amrita apart is that owner Robert Song has managed to create an unusually special and welcoming vibe, which has attracted a community of good-natured regulars who in turn welcome newcomers without judgment. (Some folks call it their living room.) The food is pretty good and reasonably priced, there's beer along with the usual café drinks, the music is decent, and it's a great place to watch international soccer—even if you're not a Barcelona fan—and listen to amused jousting over whether Lionel Messi is better than Cristiano Ronaldo. We'll let you decide. 301 West 110th Street, 212-222-0683 (10026)
