Serious cyclists have different needs than basic commuters and weekend hobbyists. A 34-year-old cycling institution in Soho recognized this and recently spun off a high-end shop a few storefronts from its main store. Here, you can find some serious performance equipment, ranging from the $18,000 Specialized/McLaren Venge to the more modest $2,200 Trek Madone. The focus at Bicycle Habitat is on racing bikes, but it also carries mountain bikes, from $10,000 on down, along with a good selection of shoes, kits, and gear. Finding the right geometry is at least as important as gear, of course: Specialized and certified staff offers comprehensive BG fittings for $200, and even more thorough fitting sessions complete with motion-capture video are available starting at $250. These guys are also trained for high-tech repairs like servicing hydraulic disc breaks and rebuilding suspensions. For all that, it's a surprisingly low-pressure environment, and the staff is as patient as it is knowledgeable.
