Food courts are usually an indifferent collection of franchise restaurants found on the top floor of a shopping mall, a place where shopping captives have to eat because there's simply nowhere else. But New York has redefined the food court, turning out independent, self-contained institutions where stalls avidly compete for your dining dollar. The best this year is Koreatown's Food Gallery 32, a three-story tower of pleasure where the food runs from straight-up Korean to the Seoul-food versions of Chinese, Japanese, and Taiwanese cuisines. You can get weird-ass nori rolls, bubbling crocks of chigae, and noodles to suit any taste—cheaply and expeditiously. Then take them to one of the dramatic upstairs seating areas. Open till midnight seven days a week. 11 West 32nd Street, 212-967-1678 (10001)
