Union Square Greenmarket
Broadway at E. 17th St., New York, NY 10003
(212) 788-7476
It's the mother of all New York farmers' markets, both for longevity and sheer size. From its humble beginnings in 1976, it has grown to include as many as 140 sellers on its busiest days. Farms from as far away as the Berkshires and as close as the five boroughs bring the sort of seasonal fruits and vegetables you'd normally expect. But there are more exotic things to be found as well at the Union Square Greenmarket: ostrich jerkey, Finnish ruis bread, fresh yogurt, beautiful maitake mushrooms, pickles, jams, merino wool from the Catskills, and an entire booth devoted to Long Island lavender. Want to know more about what you're buying? The market runs an "Ask Your Farmer" Q&A, in which you can learn where your food comes from and how it's produced. There are also regular education sessions about cooking, canning, and composting. Open every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, with the weekend seeing the most vendors. WIC and EBT accepted.
