When you talk about bars with great jukeboxes, you simply can't ignore the jukebox at Hi-Fi, which has its own name, EL-DJ, fitting for a bar space formerly occupied by live music club Brownies, where Death Cab for Cutie, Bright Eyes, and Elliott Smith, among others, debuted in New York City. El-DJ been around since Hi-Fi opened in 2002, the brainchild of owner Mike Stuto, a music industry veteran. In 2010, El-DJ was redesigned for the new era of digital music, featuring a smoother navigation system, easier user interface and search capabilities, and the ability to shuffle when not playing customer-selected tunes. El-DJ includes 3,500 albums chosen from Stuto's personal collection, and some 50,000 songs, with nearly every genre you can imagine reflected. As for Hi-Fi itself, along with having plenty of space to move to whatever you select on El-DJ, there's a pool table and a pretty great happy hour daily until 8 p.m. 169 Avenue A, 212-420-8392, thehifibar.com (10009)
