Ah, the unmistakable sound of hundreds of hard CD cases smacking against one another as shoppers pick through the recent arrivals, their fingers soiled with someone else's car dust or apartment scum as they search for that Goo Goo Dolls or Gin Blossoms album they've longed for ever since selling it for rent money in '03. The sound has got to be enough to drive Cheapo's employees absolutely bonkers. Yet they've kept on since 1972, from vinyl to cassette to compact disc and back to vinyl. Used CDs are an important piece of real estate in Cheapo stores, in spite of digital downloads and the resurgence of records. Of the locations in St. Paul, Blaine, and Uptown, we suggest the Uptown store, a behemoth white box just off Hennepin and Lake. The people-watching there is as good as ever, and with vinyl in the basement and CDs on the main floor, you can equip yourself with the Goo Goo Dolls' entire catalog, recorded digitally to optic disc, without fear of the scorn from audiophiles digging through piles of wax in the lower level.
