Offices seem to close at 3:00 p.m. on Friday afternoons in the summer. Worker bees flee their desks and their employment responsibilities to revel in the sun. Summit Avenue crawls with walkers and their strollers, joggers and their dogs, and runners and their headphones, but the quintessential summer-in-St. Paul Friday afternoon necessitates a stop at the farmers' market at St. Luke's Catholic Church, open from 1:15 to 5:00 p.m. It is more manageable than its weekend-morning counterpart in Downtown St. Paul. Strolling shoppers can make their way through in about a half an hour, examining produce that hasn't been handled by a hundred other people. Despite the pared-down size, the selection is still fresh and diverse. The heads of lettuce are plump and green. The tomatoes are full and juicy. And the flowers are always freshly cut. The short walk down the road to Kowalski's for a gallon of milk and either butter or olive oil is the perfect recipe for a healthy summer dinner.
