Flaherty's Arden Bowl
1273 W. County Road E., St Paul, MN 55112

Somehow it seems that the best, most comfortable bowling alleys are the ones with a pronounced retro vibe. They don't have blaring music and specialty cocktails, they're family-friendly, and they're big enough that you can usually get a lane. Few alleys in the metro are as homespun as Flaherty's in Arden Hills. It's been around in one form or another since 1938 and bills itself as the oldest family-owned bowling alley in America, now on its fourth generation. With 36 lanes, there's usually a spot for you (with the possible exception of prime-time during winter leagues), and a giant pub inside is perfect for après-game festivities. The menu is large and the food is straight-up bowling alley — pizzas, wings, and burgers — but the cheesy thin-crust, tavern-cut pizzas are surprisingly tasty and breakfast is served all day. Beers are unremarkable, but you can score a Guinness, Summit EPA, or Sam Adams. Flaherty's livens things up with plenty of specials, like Strike It Rich night on Fridays and many Saturdays, when you can win food or cash for making special shots, or Buy Two Get One Free Night on Tuesdays. Admittedly, Arden Hills is a bit of a haul for many Twin Citians, but you might be tempted by Dollar Night on Sundays, Mondays, and Wednesdays from 9: 30 or 10 p.m. till close: a buck for all games, shoe rentals, and tap beers.
