With back-to-back walls of colorful yarns, a cozy location and an inviting tagline ("You want to make things, we want to help"), it's hard to resist the Little Knittery. This charming shop is more than just a supply store, offering classes and private instruction in knitting, crocheting, needle felting, macramé and, perhaps most enticingly, drop-in project help anytime you think you've accidentally turned that hat into a scarf. Classes are conducted on a communal wooden table that anchors the intimate store, where fiber arts enthusiasts commence to knit, get project advice and gossip. Owner Julie Edwards, who opened the shop in 2005, wanted a space that reflected the personality of the new brand of knitter — young, creative and ready to learn. The Little Knittery specializes in beginners and carries yarn from Japan, Italy, Peru, Uruguay and Turkey, as well as American-made products. Small class sizes allow for one-on-one interaction, where "everybody feels comfortable and realizes that knitting is not a competitive sport," Edwards says, but rather a relaxing way to pass time. 3195 Glendale Blvd., Atwater Village.
