When the glossy, overpriced Fran's all-night diner opened in the Power & Light District last year, it only made the Town Topic at 20th Street and Broadway — a tiny diner out of some Edward Hopper dream of Kansas City — seem that much more fabulous. The Broadway Town Topic is the oldest of the three diners of that name in the metro, and it's the only one that stays open 24 hours — one of the last relics of downtown's glory days as an entertainment hub. After the movie theaters, saloons, strip clubs and juke joints tossed the last customers out, tipsy clientele could stroll over, grab a stool at the counter, and sober up with a mug of strong java and the Truck Stop (eggs scrambled with meat, cheese and hash browns). These days, young, tanned Power & Light patrons stumble in for a quick, inexpensive meal on their way back to the suburbs. Typically, Shirley Miller is behind the counter to take their orders, just as she has been since 1970. It's such an intimate venue that customers are forced to talk to the people around them. The results are the kinds of spontaneous conversations that could have been scripted by Woody Allen.
