Every year at the offices of The Pitch, the following dialogue ensues: Writer: "I hereby nominate gallery assistant Mo Dickens of the Belger Arts Center as the Best Humble Servant of the Arts. He is knowledgeable, totally engaged with his work and obviously concerned that every visitor have the best possible gallery experience." Editor: "Mo Dickens? That's exactly what everyone will be expecting." Writer: "He's funny and charming, too. A true raconteur. Widely versed in American art but really self-effacing about it. Exactly the public ambassador you'd want working in your first-class gallery space." Editor: "Everyone already knows Mo Dickens is awesome. What's surprising about that?" This year, the answer to the annual editorial question regarding that which is surprising about Dickens: Mo's thumb was chopped off by a giant piece of art last spring — an installation piece called "Tables and Angels" by Santa Fe artist Terry Allen. Maimed by that which he loves best, then made whole again by doctors, the perspicacious and prehensile Dickens rocks our world.
