Zoo Bar
1220 McGee St., Kansas City, MO 64106

Not too far from the impersonal, desperate groping for connection that is the Power & Light District, you'll find a bar with a real sense of camaraderie among regulars who hover from dawn till close. There's no beer on tap — bottles and hard liquor served straight are preferred — just acceptance from some very friendly lushes. You get the feeling that most of the regulars there at the 10 a.m. opening are 24-hour drinkers, a notion given weight by our friends at the Brick, who tell us that as soon as the restaurant opens, the Zoo Bar patrons are likely to call for an order of cheeseburgers. One caveat: A good dive bar should allow you to come in alone and drink, while you think over the depressing moments of your life, without feeling self-conscious about it. Lone women might be subjected to catcalls from the regulars, but it's all in good fun. One patron might apologize for his friend's behavior by blaming it on "sugar diabetes" and the recent loss of a foot. Now that's a dive bar.
